The Government Needs to Takeover Rx Medicine to Control Costs

The government shutdown was largely over the issue of continuing pandemic era health insurance credits by the government. Then the shutdown ended with a few lawmakers caving and agreeing to end the shutdown without those credits. Interestingly, this all coincides with the annual health insurance open enrollment period where many are facing ridiculous price increases in their insurance without those credits. We've also seen the national debt surpass the ridiculous amount of 38 trillion dollars. So, what's the solution? Surely we can't indefinitely subsidize health insurance payments, nor can we expect individuals and businesses to indefinitely pay exponentially growing health insurance bills. My proposed solution is to nationalize almost the entire healthcare system from payment to medical products to care. The only part of the medical industry to be exempted would be the over the counter, nonprescription medical products where the competitive marketplace works relatively well at controlling costs and maintaining adequate supply.

Relying on a profit driven business marketplace is a failed model for providing prescription medical products and care for patients in America. While the marketplace is fairly good at providing nonprescription, OTC drugs and medical products at reasonable prices, it has completely and utterly failed to do so when it comes to prescription drugs and medical devices. Thus, the only conceivable solution to controlling healthcare costs is to treat healthcare as the vital utility that it is and implement an almost complete government takeover of the prescription medical field; from R&D, to the manufacture and distribution of Rx medical products.

After this system is implemented, hospitals and clinics may be allowed to remain private if they are not engaging price gouging. But if any hospital or clinic fails, but is considered to be systemically important for the healthcare of the surrounding community, those too are to be taken over by the government and turned into public utilities the same as many other public utilities are.
